Panasonic Releases Two New Lumix Cameras, Celebrates 10 Years Of Mirrorless Cameras

Panasonic is adding to its Lumix range with the Lumix DC-TZ220, the latest flagship in the travel zoom series and the latest G model, the Lumix DC-GX9.
The company is also celebrating 10 years since it released the first Digital Single Lens Mirrorless Camera, the LUMIX DMC-G1.
Paul Reid, Managing Director, Panasonic Australia says in the past 10 years the Lumix G series has had 30 cameras and 34 lenses.
The new Lumix DC-GX9 has a 20-megapixel digital live MOS sensor and Venus Engine processor. It also is equipped with a 5-axis dual I.S.technology combining 5-axis internal stabilisation with the optical image stabilisation in selected lenses. Panasonic says this system ensures stabilisation from wide angle to telephoto, allowing shooters to leave their tripod at home and travel light. In addition, the electromagnetically-driven shutter system provides quiet, steady shooting.
The GX9’s Live View Finder (LVF) offers 2,760K-dot equivalent resolution for clarity and sharpness when shooting. The 16:9 LVF tilts up by around 80 degrees and has a high magnification of 1.39x/0.7x (35mm camera equivalent). A Power Saving LVF feature extends battery life to up to 900 images per charge . To support intuitive control, the LUMIX GX9 introduces an exposure dial for quick change of exposure settings, and a focus lever for quick adjustment between AFS (AFF)/AFC and manual focus.
Panasonic says the GX9 has responsive and rapid autofocus at 0.07 sec; 4K Photo and Video; and Bluetooth Low Energy connection to smartphones.
It will be available in April in black or two-tone silver and black priced at $1,399

Apple May Launch Wireless Charging Pad Next Month

Recent reports reveal Apple could launch its new AirPower charging pad as early as March this year – capable of wirelessly charging several Apples devices at once.
According to 9to5Mac and Japanese tech website Mac Otakara, Apple’s new AirPower will launch this year, following the company’s announcement back in September 2017.
The new Apple AirPower is designed to charge up to three Apple devices simultaneously, without wires or cables.
With a large oval pad, the product claims to be large enough to comfortably support an iPhone X, iPhone 8/Plus or Apple Watch.

Amazon Is Making Custom AI Chips For Alexa

Amazon will be developing a custom AI chip to work on its smart speakers such as Echo and other products where Amazon Alexa is installed.
In a report by The Information, this new AI chip will allow Alexa-powered devices to respond quicker to commands by allowing more data processing to be handled on the device rather than in the cloud.
This move is similar to what Google and Apple have done in the past by creating their own AI chips to add another difference in the market. The Information says this move affects chip makers like Nvidia and Intel as its customers are now competitors.

When It Comes To Voice Commands And Music, Which Kit Is Best?

Who is the best at delivering great sound technology linked to Google Assist or Harman with their JBL range of Google voice enabled speakers.
The new range of JBL Link products are designed specifically to deliver great sound while delivering voice management capability using technology developed by Google with their Google Assist.
While Google is great at delivering software such as Android, Chrome and their Google Assist technology I think they sould leave sound output to pro’s lioke Harman and JBL.
The dilemma for many music loving consumers is do I buy a base Google device or invest the added dollars in a third-party product like the JBL Link offering.
If you play music every day and want quality output the answer is the new range of JBL Link speakers. They not only deliver unique voice command capability via the likes of Spotify or Google Music, with a simple “Okay Google” command they deliver superior sound which is expected from a brand that has a reputation for delivering great sound from both Pro speakers to portable waterproof speakers.
All 3 of the Link models to the current JBL portable speaker designs.
Link 10 and 20 are both lightweight but still feel solid in the hand. The Link 300 has a subwoofer built in.
The JBL Link 10 and 20 are similarly styled with basically the same button placements.
Both are cylindrical with a mesh-type covering and solid top and bottom.
The power button and microphone mute button are on the back of both units along with the battery level indicator. At the bottom back of both the 10 and 20 is the MicroUSB charging port.
At the top of both units, you’ll find the Google Assistant button, volume/track buttons, play/pause button and Bluetooth/pairing button. There are also LED indicators at the top front for volume and at the bottom front for Wi-Fi connectivity.
The Link 10 is comparable with the Google Home in price, with better audio and a portable, rugged build.

Hisense & Sharp Bail On Legal Fight Over Dodgy Hisense TV Claims

Japanese TV brand Sharp has dropped their legal action against Hisense after branding their TV’s low-quality TV’s with Sharp now set to return to global TV markets with a new 8K and OLED TV offering.
ChannelNews understands that following several meetings between the two Companies it has been agreed that Sharp will get their brand name back from Hisense immediately which will allow Foxconn, the new owners of Sharp, to start selling their TV’s in the USA later this year.
Hisense had licensed the Sharp brand name to stick on Hisense made TV’s after consumers in the USA and Europe rejected the Hisense brand.
Last year Sharp took legal action to block China’s Hisense Group Co Ltd from selling TV sets in North America under Sharp’s brand.
Since then Hisense has moved to license the Toshiba brand, they are also set to start selling Laser TV’s. They did this because they only had three years left on the Sharp license contract.
A Sharp spokesman has declined to comment.
Sharp cut back its overseas TV business and licensed Hisense to use its brand in the United States in 2015. It later sued the Chinese state-owned firm for putting the Sharp name on what it said were low-quality TVs.
In September, Sharp asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to probe certain Wi-Fi enabled devices and their parts after Sharp accused Hisense of infringing its patents.
In August 2017, Sharp, filed a lawsuit challenging a foreign gag order that Hisense had initiated that Sharp lawyers said prevented Sharp from talking about its own brand.
The dispute followed claims by Sharp that after the Japanese Company cut a licensing deal and sold one of its factories to Hisense, along with the rights to sell televisions under the Sharp brand in the North American market for five years.
According to Sharp, Hisense quickly lowered its manufacturing quality and started shipping sub-standard televisions under the Sharp brand. In April, Sharp, now owned by Taiwan-based Foxconn, said that it was terminating the trademark licensing deal.
Hisense filed a notice of arbitration with the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, which is the dispute resolution agreed upon by the parties in their licensing deal. In June, Sharp filed a lawsuit (PDF) in California state court seeking to terminate the licensing agreement.

Sony, LG, Panasonic, Samsung to increase costs of LED and OLED TVs in India

If we recall, the Indian government had raised customs duty on imported panels to 15 percent from the existing 7.5 percent during the budget 2018 announcement. The government had also increased the customs duty on parts of LCD/LED/OLED TVs to 15 percent from the existing 10 percent to boost domestic manufacturing. And now we are seeing the effects of the new norms that the government has set. According to reports, leading TV manufacturers like Sony, LG, Panasonic and Samsung are set to increase prices of their LED/OLED sets by up to 7 percent to offset the impact of an increase in customs duty.

Sony, LG, Panasonic, Samsung to increase costs of LED and OLED TVs

Manufacturers are also expecting a short-term impact on sales and the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) has reportedly initiated a dialogue with the government to reconsider the duty hike. Talking about the responses that the brands have now given, Panasonic is said to go for a hike of 2-7 percent on its range of LED/OLED TVs. "The increase in the prices of LED/OLED TVs and thereby, an impact on the consumer demand will be imminent with the proposed custom hike. In line, we will be increasing our prices by 2 percent to 7 percent," Panasonic India Business Head Consumer Electronics Division Sales Neeraj Bahl told PTI. Samsung is reportedly planning for a hike of around 5-6 percent. Whereas LG Electronics India Managing Director Ki Wan Kim has stated that there is "no way to avoid it" and that LG was still working on it. "Internally we would try our best to absorb some of the additional cost through R&D innovation and manufacturing innovations by improving the productivity," added Kim. Popular brand Sony has said the prices have not increased but the company is currently evaluating the mid and long-term impact of the duty. "Keeping the current situation in mind, it seems likely that we may have to increase the price in the future," said Sony India Bravia Business Head Sachin Rai.
According to the CEAMA, the price increase will likely have a negative impact on the demand and thus further affect the panel industry in short term, which is already going through rough times for the last two consecutive years. "We believe in the short-term, the move will drive inflation and have a setback on consumption as prices may go up to 7 percent impacting the demand for TVs and further limit the scope of expansion and creation of more job opportunities," said CEAMA President Manish Sharma. "CEAMA has already initiated a dialogue with the Government of India and the Ministry of Finance, seeking a reversal on the customs duty hike of up to 10 percent on open cell and other components of the panel." Further, on being asked whether price hike would impact the prospects of the industry, Rai mentioned that the economic indicators and purchase patterns for TV in India reflect a positive picture and considering that there has been consistent growth in the television sector over the years, the current scenario may not severely hamper the overall situation. "Such short-term dips are likely to be compensated with strong come-back in the mid-long term," he said

Samsung Unveils “The Wall,” the World’s First Modular MicroLED 146-inch TV

Samsung Electronics today introduced “The Wall” – the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED 146-inch TV – at its annual First Look CES event. The modular, self-emitting MicroLED 146” TV display was featured alongside Samsung’s latest innovations in display technology, demonstrating how television is evolving to offer consumers an outstanding viewing experience, while acting as a centralized connected smart hub to enhance everyday life.

This year’s First Look, attended by more than 300 global media and influencers, included remarks from Jonghee Han, Samsung’s President of Visual Display, and Dave Das, Senior Vice President of Consumer Electronics at Samsung Electronics America. Both outlined Samsung’s vision of the future – one in which TV displays deliver brilliant visuals and also evolve to integrate seamlessly into people’s lives.

“At Samsung, we are dedicated to providing consumers with a wide range of cutting-edge screen experiences,” said Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “As the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED television, ‘The Wall’ represents another breakthrough. It can transform into any size, and delivers incredible brightness, color gamut, color volume and black levels. We’re excited about this next step along our roadmap to the future of screen technology, and the remarkable viewing experience it offers to consumers.”

First Ever ModularTV with MicroLED: The Screen of the Future
Samsung’s “The Wall,” a 146-inch modular TV with MicroLED technology delivers incredible definition, without restrictions to size, resolution or form. It is a self-emitting TV with micrometer (µm) scale LEDs – which are much smaller than current LEDs, and serve as their own source of light.

The MicroLED technology featured in The Wall eliminates the need for color filters or backlight, yet allows the screen to offer consumers the ultimate viewing experience. Also, the MicroLED screen excels in durability and effectiveness, including luminous efficiency, the light source lifetime and power consumption, setting the standard for future screen technology.

Featuring a module-based, bezel-less design, “The Wall” also exemplifies how consumers can customize their television sizes and shapes to suit their needs. The screen can adapt to serve different purposes, such as creating a wall-size display for multiple spaces.
AI Technology for 8K Picture Quality: Maximizing Viewer Experience
Samsung also featured the world’s first QLED TV featuring 8K AI technology, which will be launched internationally, starting with Korea and the US during the second half of 2018. This AI technology upscales standard definition content to 8K resolution. It employs a proprietary algorithm to adjust screen resolution based on picture quality characteristics of each scene, to continuously improve picture quality and easily transform any type of content from any source into a high-resolution 8K.
This 8K solution maximizes the viewing experience through several new features. These include detail enhancement – to upgrade standard definition content; noise reduction; edge restoration function – which more clearly outlines on – screen objects; and automatic sound adjustment for different content, such as sports events or music concerts.

Tech Review: Sony Xperia XA2 is a solid mid-range phone with a good camera

Sony Xperia XA2

Mobile World Congress kicks off next week and, with it, a host of new smartphones from the main manufacturers will be unveiled. Getting in ahead of the pack is Sony, which has released a couple of new models. Chief among these is its mid-range handset, the Xperia XA2.
It's a solid, even impressive device for the money.
The first thing you notice about the 5.2-inch phone is its relative heft. Sony isn't going for light and slim here. Instead, this is a full centimetre thick and weighs 171 grams (about 15pc heavier than the iPhone 8). It also has Sony's distinctively sharpish corner edges, with a bit of a chamfered effect. This latter design style is not a friendly one for trousers or jeans pockets, accelerating the fraying process. It's stylish, though, and makes the XA2 stand out in a sea of other Android models.
The next thing you'll notice is a dedicated camera button, which Sony has retained for about a decade. I personally like this feature, it allows you to get to your camera function much quicker than on other smartphones.
Speaking of the camera, the XA2's 23-megapixel sensor is excellent compared to other phones in its price bracket. You won't get a better rear camera on a handset under €500, even if its 24mm field of view isn't to everyone's tastes. (The iPhone uses a 28mm focal length, which is more flattering as a portrait lens.)
As for video, the XA2 shoots in 4K as well as ordinary 'full HD' video at 60 frames per second and it supports slow-motion video of up to 120 frames per second. Its stabilisation is decent and it also supports 'HDR video', which evens out harsher colour contrasts when shooting into shadows or sunlight.
An 8-megapixel selfie camera is a lot wider still ("super wide angle", according to Sony), which means it's even less flattering than the rear camera. It's a lot more suited to group selfies. In theory it should also be suited to lots of background detail placing a solo selfie in context, but the selfie sensor is much smaller than the rear camera - so you won't get anything like the same resolution.
The phone's built-in 32GB of storage memory is enough to hold a reasonable amount of photos and video, although there's also an extra memory card slot that you can take advantage of if you think you'll shoot more than the phone can hold.
The XA2 comes with a fairly impressive 3,300mAh battery, which gives it a very decent all-day performance under normal conditions.
There's a fingerprint-reader on the back of the phone, as is becoming the norm for lots of Android phones.
